Kathryn Cowen, #otherworlds2, 2021, AIRspace Projects

Kathryn Cowen, in collaboration with poet and experimental sound artist Dr Gareth Jenkins, presents #otherworlds2 ; an immersive sound, light, painting, sculpture and scent filled installation which draws on the sci fi genre to present a biofuturistic world bathed in ultraviolet light within the Deep Space Gallery.

This multimedia installation aims to transport the audience into a speculative fiction; another world, which questions possible futures and contributes to cultural and ecological conversations around climate change, synthetic biology, space exploration and virtual realities. A large landscape painting sets the scene for the encounter, with elements brought forth into the gallery space in the form of biomorphic sculptures, made form a combination of synthetic and organic materials; propositions for hybridised organic/inorganic future life forms. Spoken word poetry and an experimental soundscape provides a strange, disjointed, dark, incantatory narrative; enveloping the viewer under the ultraviolet light. ‘Real life’ is reimagined as a hypothetical life, future life, possible/impossible life - the familiar rendered strange and peculiar – just as recent years have rendered the world.
